Digg: How they SHOULD have done it
Published by Adam Lyttle on June 21, 2007

Comments
Digg, the insanely popular social news site, recently introduced, took down and then reintroduced a new commenting system.

What happened to our beloved site? Sure the new system gives us nested commenting - allowing us to comment on comments posted within comments of comments - but it also took away something very precious to us.

Instead of just ranting about how bad the new commenting system is, I thought I would be a bit more productive and offer my two-cents.

Automatically show the first few levels of replies
The idea of having nested comments is cool. But having to click on each message to see replies is tedious. I have already found myself clicking on the "View Replies" link, waiting 10 - 20 seconds, only to find a handful of replies which really don't deserve my time.

I would love it if the top level replies were automatically displayed. Giving me the possibilty to see the conversation flow at a glace.

Split the comments into pages
Ok, so this is done with the new system. But it would have been so much better if we reverted back to the old system with some sort of limit on the number of comments that can be displayed on a single page. This will fix the issue of load times and it will give me the ability to go through the pages one by one.

Sure, there would be more clicking than the previous system but it would beat the new system hands down!

Sort the comments by most popular first
I really can't tell if this has been implemented with the current system. To avoid comment abuse this really should be in there. And if it is in there it should be less confusing.

At the very least
If Digg keeps the new system, then at the very least I think we should have the following:
    Tree View
We need a much easier way to navigate through all of those comments. A Tree View would do the trick.

    Friends Comments
We now have a very pretty icon that shows when a friend has commented on a story. But where on earth is my friends comment? I can't see it because it's buried in one of the hidden replies. I need to physically expand every single reply link just to see my friends comments. It's like playing an insanely slow game of hide-n-seek.
Hopefully Digg will do something about the commenting system. I know the previous system wasn't perfect, but at least it was usable.

I agree with everything, but you can sort by popularity very easily.
