Last night I attended an informative key note event by Ed Dale from "World Internet Authority", a successful online entrepeneur. The event was introduced by the Minister for Small Business, The Honourable Karlene Maywald.
Ed started the event off by introducing himself and describing, in great detail, how he stumbled into online business before making his first million. His first business was a website design firm which was subsequently sold for $3 million. He then went on to build a new business focusing on the publication and distribution of niche "how-to" books online. He then sold the business for another $5 million.
After being in business for many years Ed realised that small business has many advantages in the online world. He believes small business can take advantage of more opportunities online than big business and corporations.
Business is all about relationships. With this in mind Ed discussed the importance of websites as a communication tool, not just a stock standard catalogue. He urged small business to be creative and take advantage of many of the opportunities online, before their competitors do.
The Case for Blogging
Ed Dale was all for Blogging. This is definitely something I agree with. After developing and releasing a Blog we immediately saw a huge increase in traffic from search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, etc) and from referrals (through people recommending stories to friends and colleagues).
Ed makes a strong case on blogging:
- Search engines love blogs
- They are easy to update
- They can even be updated from a mobile
- They can add life to a website (video, audio, etc)
- Internet is about communication, a blog is a conversation with a businesses audience
After showing off his brand new iPhone (which has yet to be released in Australia), he was able to take a photo of the audience and upload it to his blog (see his blog entry here I am in SA for more details, if you look closely you can see me right at the back). Inspired by this, I took a photo of the event for the Adamant Blog:
