StumbleUpon Alerter Beta 1.2
Published by Adam Lyttle on March 7, 2008

Comments

A new version of StumbleUpon Alerter has been released for those that were having problems with the version released yesterday. This patch fixes some of the issues pointed out over the last 24 hours.

Usually I don't release software under beta, but I have done so with StumbleUpon Alerter. This is mainly because StumbleUpon does not have any API for developers to use (which probably explains the lack of tools available for the site). But I hope to have these issues fixed over time.

Click here to download version 1.2 beta (1,727kb)

Note: Make sure you close StumbleUpon Alerter before installing the new version.

What's New?
  • Newly found discoveries are displayed immediately - no need to restart (thanks kdfrawg)
  • Fixed a few problems that occurred once you reach your maximum discoveries
  • Changing the username no longer requires a restart (thanks nowsourcing)
Frequently Asked Questions

I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the software, so I thought it would be good to have a FAQ section:

Q: When I install StumbleUpon Alerter on Vista I receive the error "Component MSWINSCK.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered", what do I do?

1Only and liamvictor have pointed out that the program must run in Administrator mode to be installed correctly. Right click the program and click "Run as Administrator".

Q: When I start the program it doesn't show the number of discoveries I specified, why?

Due to the lack of any API from StumbleUpon the program downloads a listing of your likes and discoveries from the RSS feed. The program goes through the RSS feed and only picks out the discoveries, leaving the "likes" behind. Over time it will display your maximum number of discoveries.

Q: Can you show me who has given my discoveries a thumbs down?

StumbleUpon Alerter is limited to the same information that you see when visiting the StumbleUpon site. This means there is no way to see who has thumbed down your articles unless they leave a review.

Q: It's not showing all of the reviews / thumbs, why?

Once again due to the lack of an API, StumbleUpon Alerter watches your discoveries when it is running. When you start the program it should be able to download many of the reviews / thumbs but is not guaranteed to grab all.

Adam, Any way to add a "Your Site" tab that shows all urls from a designated domain that have been stumbled? Not sure the limitations on doing this but would be great feature.

Adam Lyttle commented on March 8, 2008

Burento: An undocumented feature in the new version kind of plays around with this idea. Click "Edit" then "Add Another Site". However it doesn't keep track of your entire domain name, just the single page. The next major release may have something similar to what you are talking about.

Adam, first of all great work! Just loved it. However I tried to run it on Linux using Wine but I got an error: "object variable or with block variable not set" now I am no programming expert, but googling it told me that this is a programming error, do you have any idea how to resolve this??

Adam Lyttle commented on March 18, 2008

Rami: It's good to see that the program loaded up in Linux. I don't really know what is going on under the hood when running it using Wine. If I get a chance I will install Wine and check it out for myself.

I finally got around to downloading and playing with the Alerter. I'm very impressed. Its fast, and seems to work pretty well. I've got a few features for a future version: 1) Option -&#gt; Download frequency (every 5 mins, every hour, etc) 2) Sub Menu -&#gt; for user reviews/thumbs so I can view their profile page 3) in the main window make the columns sortable, so I can sort by domain, # thumbs, # of reviews. 4) Change alert sound to selected wav/mp3 I hope you find the features I recommended useful. Thanks for building such a wonderful program. -WebDoodle

I get an error when i install it: Component 'mswinsck.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing of invalid. I am using vista and the latest version of firefox not sure what the problem is.

Software assisted writing is a controversial subject. The purist will browbeat you saying that you are cheating. But if you are using it for research and mechanical construction there should be no problems, After all you are still the creator of the final product.

Would love to see this updated... it's a great piece of software...

Are you ever going to make a Mac version??
